SICK THIEVES ROB PENSIONER WHILE SHE ATTENDS MASS

Thieves in Newtowncunningham have stooped to a new low after robbing a pensioner – while she was at mass.

The burglars broke into the elderly woman’s house in the village after she left for 11am mass yesterday morning.

When the woman returned around 11.45am, her house had been ransacked and a number of items taken.

The shocking robbery in broad daylight is the latest in a spate of incidents in Newtown.

Just a few hours earlier on Saturday evening, the Newtown City Chinese takeaway was held up.

A man armed with a knife and a hammer threatened staff around 8.20pm and got away with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Local county Councillor Paul Canning said it took Gardai 45 minutes to respond to the call.

He has slammed the lack of Garda manpower in the area.
