Having been very vocal on the issue over the past number of years,
Sinn Féin Cllr Cora Harvey has today welcomed the recent confirmation
at local area level that the Council has finalised land negotiations
and works on the Trusk Road Footpath are due to commence shortly.
Cllr Harvey said:
“I questioned Council Officials on this matter at the last Stranorlar
Electoral Area Meeting and was delighted to be informed that the deal
is near completion and works will commence shortly.
“This is a welcome development for all the pedestrians and motorists
who use the stretch of road, in particular the residents of the
Weavers Estate who have been waiting for this footpath for some 10
years.
“The difficulties in securing this project have been well documented
in County Council and Local Area minutes and the Council was
repeatedly urged by all members of the Local Area Committee to take
whatever steps necessary to ensure this work was completed.
“On one occasion, in September 2009, when I was newly elected, I
submitted a motion to Donegal County Council to take all action
necessary to secure the strip of land required. I was fortunate to
enjoy the support of my Council Colleagues with Cllr McGowan seconding
the motion. My sole motivation was to ensure a timely resolution of an
issue which had been ongoing for years.
“One of the options available to local authorities to secure land
required for Public use is a CPO. The CPO mechanism, in certain
circumstances, can be a useful tool in reaching an agreement in land
negotiations and can ensure that a fair price for both the vendor and
buyer is secured.
“I am glad this issue has been finally resolved and I would like to
commend the Council Officials and the Landowner for coming to an
arrangement in the best interests of all.
