SAND AHOY – DONEGAL VILLAGE TO ATTEMPT CASTLE-BUILDING WORLD RECORD

A seaside village is to attempt to break the sand castle-making world record.

Residents of Dunfanaghy are to attempt the feat at Killahoey beach on September 15th next.

And among those who will be armed with a bucket and spade will be members of the Donegal GAA team who have signed up for the challenge.

The record of the most number of sandcastles built in one hour is a bucket-busting 571.

But residents in Dunfanaghy, who already have 11 community groups organised for the challenge, are in a confident mood.

The record attempt will be staged as part of the famous Dunfanaghy Jazz and Blues Festival.

Organiser Sian McCann said they are hoping to attract as many sandcastle-builders as possible.

“We’re going to create a real party atmosphere and we’re hoping to get as many people on the beach as we can.

“There is no rule as to the number of people who can build castles so the more the better chance we have of smashing the record.

“If we get a good day we could set a record that could stand for a very long time.”
