WE WILL NOT UNDERMINE GYNAECOLOGY SERVICES – LETTERKENNY HOSPITAL MANAGER

The manager of Letterkenny General Hospital has admitted that there are plans to relocate the Gynaecology Ward at the hospital.

However, Mr Sean Murphy has insisted that there are no plans to undermine the service.

The hospital manager was speaking as anger grows at suggestions of plans to downgrade or move the ward which is used by up to 20 women each day.

Campaigners are concerned any tampering with the current unit will see a removal of the ‘female only nurse’ status the unit currently holds.

A campaign against the proposed relocation of the service has already received more than 1,000 backers on Facebook.

Mr Murphy told Highland Radio “We are actively looking at how we could relocate the gyneacology services to other surgical wards to relive staff to allow us to move into new medical block.”

However he added “We are not undermining the gynaecology services but we have to look at the options we are looking at.”

He said no decision had been taken in relation to using male nurses at the unit.
