A trainee mechanic accused of killing journalist Eugene Moloney was further remanded in custody today

Mr Moloney (55) died after an incident in Dublin city centre last June. Although he was born in England his family settled in Fahan, Co Donegal.

He was laid to rest there alongside his mother after his death in June.

Gary Burch (21) of Kennington Close, Templogue, south Dublin was charged in June with the manslaughter of Mr Moloney.

Burch, dressed in a light grey shirt and dark trousers, did not address the court during his brief hearing today.

Detective Sergeant Mark Kelly of Kevin Street Garda station applied to extend his remand for four weeks pending the preparation of the book of evidence. Defence solicitor Con Pendred had no objection to the extension.

Mr Moloney was a former reporter with the Irish Independent and lived at Portobello Place on Dublin’s southside. On June 24th he was making his way home in the early hours after a night out with friends. He suffered a blow to the head on Camden Street.

Mr Burch is due to appear in court on September 19th.
