Michael makes it two Captains Day prizes at Portsalon Golf Club
Captains Day
There was a large turnout at Portsalon Golf Club on Saturday last to contest for the D P Logue’s Captains prize. Upwards on 200 members and visitors played in this year event. Playing in excellent weather conditions this was one of the largest turnouts in many years. The vast numbers showed the esteem the members held for their Captain D P Logue. With the large numbers the first golfers teed off in the wee small hours. Playing off the back tees and with some tricky pin positions the scoring reflected the conditions. The winner having collected his first major golfing title in 2009 he came out on top again with a slender margin of a one shot winning margin. The overall winner was 17 handicapper Michael Shields who recorded an impressive 69 nett to win by one shot for his son Daniel Shields (11) with 70 nett Gross went to Tim Browne (4) , third John Boyle (23) 71, fourth Paddy Mc Groarty (19) 71 nett. Councli prize winner went to Joe Hensey (12) 71 nett, the past captains prize went to Donal Callaghan (13) 73 nett, visitor Ian Anthony City Of Derry (5) 71 nett, country member Kieran O’Neill ((14) 72 nett. Best nines went to Liam Mc Ateer and Michael Martin. The CSS was 72
The Portsalon Ladies contested the Captains prize on the previous Thursday and the winner was Sarah Nicholl, 2nd Rita Mc Lochlain, Gross Claire Mc Gonagle, 3rd Lady Captain Noreen Mc Conigley.
Michael Shields thanked the Captain and said that he was delighted to win the Captains Prize. He thanked the captain for the beautiful prizes and thanked his playing partners and the greens staff. Sara Nicholl thanked the Captain on behalf of the ladies for the prizes.
The Captain D P Logue said that it was indeed his pleasure to serve this club as Captain and thanked the members for the privilege bestowed on him. He thanked all the members who played in this his Captains Day and said the only thing wrong on the day was that he was unable to play. He welcomed his mother and father and family to Portsalon and thanked them for being with him on this his special day. He thanked his wife Rosanne who helped him in many ways throughout this his year as Captain of Portsalon Golf Club. He also welcomed visiting captains, friends and hoped that they had an enjoyable day on the Portsalon Banks and that they would have an enjoyable time at Portsalon He thanked his fellow council members for their assistance in preparation for this day. He thanked Grace Shields, Karina Mc Ginley for all their help not alone for all their work today but through the year. He thanked Sean Mc Gettigan and his catering staff. He had a special thanks to John Shields and the hard working greens staff who had the course looking its very best. He thanked everyone for their attendance the presentation function and wished everyone an enjoyable night.
Fixtures
On Saturday 25th August Portsalon golf club will stage the Diarmuid Coll sponsored gents open competition. Sunday 26th an open gents competition and on Wednesday 29th an open gents competition.
Presidents Day
The next golfing major on the Portsalon golfing fixture list tees off on Saturday 1st September as the members will contest for the Wm Mc Cleary’s Presidents Prize.Over his golfing career Willie for a number of years served on the council of Portsalon golf club and was involved with the initial purchase of the club and the major redevelopment which has seen the club reach new heights in the golfing world . Willie was bestowed with the coveted title of club captain in 2002. Through his golfing years Willie has captained and represented Portsalon golf club at all levels. This now Willie’s second year of his tenure as President of Portsalon Golf Club. The Captain D P Logue and the members of Portsalon golf club wish club president Willie Mc Cleary every success on this his special day at Portslaon golf club.
Team News
Portsalon golf club entertained Ballybofey/Stranlorar golf club in the return leg of the Donegal Minor league on Sunday last. Having obtained two matches away from home in the first leg this was still going to be a difficult task. The travelling twin towns team emerged winners on the day by three matches to two and overall six matches to four. The captain D P Logue would like to thank the team captain John Fitzgerald and all the members who represented Portsalon in the competition. Portsalon golf club wish Ballybofey/Stranlorar success in the final rounds.
Results
Winner of the Wednesday open was Mick Mc Glynn (20) 33 points Runner up Mathew Kilgore (8) 32 points. On Sunday following the excitement of Captains Day the winner of the members competition was 19 handicapper Paddy Mc Groarty with 42 points. The CSS was 36 points. On Friday the Captain staged a pre Captains Day scramble and the winning team was Paul Shields, Ryan Mc Gettigan and Ciaran Mc Fadden.
Past Captains
The coveted Past Captains cup will be staged at Portsalon golf course on Saturday 8th September. The first tee is reserved from 12.40 to 1. 40.
Divot Evening.
The Captain D P Logue and green keeper John Shields would like to thank everyone who turned out on Thursday evening for the divot evening, A special thanks to young John Shields who ensured that all carried out the task correctly.
Junior Golf
All junior members should note that the Kernaghan Cup and the Ton Up Cup will be staged at Portsalon Golf Club on Friday 24th August.
