The husband of former Minister, Tanaiste and TD Mary Coughlan has passed away after a long battle with cancer.

David Charlton, a member of An Garda Siochana, died last night.

Mr Charlton, 48, passed away at the family home in Frosses.

His remains are reposing at his home with removal on Tuesday morning at 11.30 for Funeral Mass at 12 noon in St. Mary’s Church, Frosses with interment afterwards in Cranny Road cemetery.

The couple, who had been married for more than 20 years, have two children Meabh (13) and Cathal (15).

Mr Charlton had been stationed at Glenties Garda station.

Tributes have been flowing in for Mr Charlton who was a native of Kiltimagh, Co Mayo.

Ms Coughlan retired from politics after losing her seat in the last general election and had stayed out of the public limelight.

Since then she has been spending all her time with her family.

The couple met when Mr Charlton was serving at Dail Eireann in the 1990s.

May he rest in peace.
