DONEGAL NY BEAT RANGERS FOR INTERMEDIATE CROWN
FROM IRA GOLDMAN: A solid 4-12 to 1-12 victory over Rangers at Gaelic Park today gives Donegal GFC NY both silverware and promotion to the Senior ranks they vacated two years ago to focus on the middle range.
Rangers and Donegal have always played entertaining games at a high standard and Sunday was no exception. Indeed, Rangers had beaten Donegal Juniors to gain their promotion to Intermediate, but it took the men of The Hills just two years to clamber back above their foe.
Donegal opened the scoring and kept the lead through a tightly played first half that ended with them up by three, 1-7 to 0-7, thanks to a Justin Burke goal. Bainestoir Pat McGill had his lads fired up to show a work rate worthy of champions.
The second stanza remained close but Donegal held on until a Rangers goal leveled the sides and a fast point gave them the minimum lead. But it was to stop there.
The last 15 minutes featured two goals from James Moynagh and another from Mourne man Mickey Annette put Tir Conaill up by an insurmountable margin. Sparkling defense throughout the match by Niall McMahon and PJ Flanagan continued to frustrate the Rangers attack and the game ended with Donegal claiming the McHugh Cup by a nine point margin.
