GOLF NEWS: LETTERKENNY GOLF CLUB LADIES NOTES

It is not often I devote the headlines to the men! Best of luck is extended to the Ulster Cup team and Team Captain Charlie Coughlan, who play the final in Letterkenny Golf Club this Sunday 16th September at 1pm. One of the biggest competitions to come to Letterkenny Golf Club in recent years, everyone is urged to please come and support the team as they try to regain the title they last won in 2010.

The golfing season and nights are fast drawing in and some of our fair weather ladies are already polishing and storing their clubs for yet another year. Granted, there was not a lot of fair weather around this summer, but we made the most of it! Our next event on the diary, is of course Lady Captain Angela Kilgallens outing to Redcastle for golf, dinner, B & B on the 22nd Sept. Who knows, perhaps some of the Donegal team might join us for some pre match tips from the ladies.

The lady beginners took to the course for a scramble with experienced golfers to finish off their coaching season. The winning team was Marian O’Sullivan and Mary Fowley along with Anne McAleer and Marjorie Morrison, 2nd was Anne Cannon, Anne Condon, Marie Gallen and Barbara McFeely and 3rd was Karen Crawford, Bridget McClafferty, Eileen Devine and Helen Bonnar. Well done to Anne Condon who worked so closely with new lady beginners this year, making their golfing experience an enjoyable introduction to the sport.

The winner of the September Pendant was Celine Bradley 75nett. Runner-up Marian OSullivan 75 nett B.O.T. 3rd Marian Keating 75nett B.O.T. It was also the final competition to count Golfer of the Year points, which at the start of the day was just 2 points between Celine Bradley and Marian O’Sullivan in favour of Marian. Thoughts of a juicy punnet at the 10th inspired the young Sligo lass, although she feared ‘she had blown it’ at the 16 the, but kept plugging away until the last ball was in the last hole to emerge the victor this year again, by one point.

The 13 hole competition on Thursday was played in close to gale force weather, or so it felt. Cathy Marren apparently never noticed it and won with 28 points. Runner up Rena O’Herlihy 27pts and 3rd Monica McDonagh 26pts.

On Sat 15th Lady Captain Angela leads the team to play the Mary McDaid Memorial Cup in Portsalon Golf Club. Best wishes to everyone on what is always a most enjoyable day out.

Lady Captain Angela, Mr Captain Niall and Mr President Padraic mentioned from time to thousand times, they qualified to play in the K Club last weekend! Representing the club very well, they narrowly missed out on a placing. No doubt, they may have mentioned once or twice the club is celebrating its centenary year in 2013!

Next Tuesday there will be a club competition. Dare I say it, the Christmas Turkey competitions will soon be starting and the return of the very popular running hamper competition which will be 18 holes on weekends only. The competition secretary will be working furiously as always, to ensure all information is displayed on the notice board in advance.
