PRINGLE’S LOGIC ON HOUSEHOLD CHARGE COSTS IS BAFFLING – HARTE

Senator Jimmy Harte has slammed Deputy Thomas Pringle’s claim that €7 million is being spent on collecting the household charge is cynical politics at its worst.

The Labour party politician said the reality is that it is the refusal by non-payment campaign to pay up that is costing the taxpayer.

“The assertion by Deputy Pringle that seven million euro is being spent collecting the Household Charge is a waste shows that the campaign of refusal to pay is costing the tax payers.

“If those advocating non payment were responsible citizens then the cost of collection would be much less. He can’t have it both ways.

“Campaigning for non payment and then complaining about the cost of collection is a ridiculous argument and it’s a bit like the man in court for killing his parents claiming leniency on the grounds that he is now an orphan,” he said.

He added that Deputy Pringle should advise people to obey the law and not tell them that he has another way which he doesn’t have.

“It’s cynical politics at its worst,” he said.
