LIFE’S A BEACH – BUT NOT WHEN YOU BREAK THE WORLD SAND-CASTLE BUILDING RECORD

A Donegal seaside village has smashed the world sand-castle building record.

The residents of Dunfanaghy had to make more than 683 castles in just one hour at Killahoey beach on Saturday afternoon last.

But the bucket-busting Donegal sandcastle builders demolished the record by constructing a staggering 1,939 castles in the hour.

Organiser Sian McCann said the group must now send a video to the Guinness Book of World Records and hope to get the official record in two months time.

“We had a brilliant day and the sun shone down on us which made it just perfect.

“We must have had more than 400 volunteers taking part including kids from the playschool, the five local national schools, as well as people from the boxing club, the soccer club, the badminton club, the Irish dancing club and many more.

“It will take a few weeks to get official confirmation and we have to send them a video of the day but we’re confident we have done it,” she said.

Sian said she was also hoping to individual certificates for all those who took part in the world-record attempt.
