GOLF NEWS: DUNFANAGHY CLUB NOTES

Well what a time we have had in Dunfanaghy over the last few weekends. For a lot of the Holiday homes and Caravanners it was probably the last big blowout at the end of the season, mind you the die-hards still come down.

The weather was brilliant in fact better than most of the summer and Dunfanaghy Golf Club decided this year to help host the Jazz and Blues Festival which is held in the town at this time of year. Of course the Golf Club does not have the Big venue but we took care of that by putting up a massive Marquee with all the trimmings. The clubhouse converted to a restaurant and the bar in the ‘tent’.

This obviously worked well as the crowds were fantastic all weekend and the support given to the Club was great. Many thanks to all who helped make this possible and the great success it was. The weekend helped boost the Club finances at a quiet time of year. With a few wee tweaks the weekend next year will be better – if that’s possible.

And now to the Past Captains.

This event is hosted each year by the current Captain of the club to Honour the Past Captains of the Club and all the work they put in during their respective years. It usually consists of a round of golf and a meal followed by a very friendly social event.

This year was no exception and Captain James Doherty was the perfect Host.

The weather on the day was again exceptional with very little wind and so the scoring reflected this.

The first 4 places were separated by only 2 points with first place being decided on BOT.

The ‘Cup / Trophy’ for the past Captains is a very unique item and was designed and built by Lua Breen who is himself a Past Captain and it is in the form of an Egg Timer with a Golf ball split and glued to each end. The supports for the timer are a Putter and a flagpole (miniature silver of course) as I said a very unique piece. Last year it was won by M Murray who admitted he had something like that at home but forgot to return it.

Such are the Past Captains – a very laid back affair.
