Gardai are investigating an alleged extortion at a betting shop.

A man telephoned Toots Takes All bookmakers in Lifford yesterday and demanded that a member of staff put money into a bag.

He then ordered the bag to be put in a taxi and then taken to a location in the Doneyloop area where it would be collected.

It is understood an undisclosed amount of cash was dropped off at the location.

It is unclear if any threat was made to the staff.

The owner of the betting shop refused to comment on the incident.

Gardai have now set up an incident room at Letterkenny Garda station to investigate the claim.

A spokesman for the Garda press office said no burglary or robbery took place and that the matter is under investigation.
