A woman had to be airlifted to safety after she broke her ankle in the Poison Glen today.

The 38 year old was part of a 150 scout group on a three day hiking group en route to Slieve Sneacht.

The Scout group was led by an experienced member of the Glen of Imaal Mountain Rescue Team.

The area was remote so the Donegal Mountain Rescue Team, who had been alerted to the incident by Milford Gardai at 1pm, requested Rescue 118 assistance from Malin Head Coastguard Station.

Malin Coastguard co-ordinated the rescue and the helicopter in poor conditions found the group and winched the lady on board and transferred her to Letterkenny Hospital.

The Scout group continued their hike and are spending a second night in the mountains in the area.

DMRT were stood down en route to the group.
