DONEGAL’S four town councils will be axed today by Environment Minister Phil Hogan.
And his sweeping changes don’t stop there – County Councillors are to lose decision-making powers on planning and land zoning.
Letterkenny, Buncrana, Bundoran and Ballyshannon will be chopped with staff losing their jobs.
All current functions will transfer to Donegal County Council. Buildings will be sold off as part of the cost-cutting exercise.
Mr Hogan is giving plans to the Cabinet today on redundancy packages for staff losing their jobs.
Only Galway and Cork will retain municipal city councils, alongside the four in Dublin.
Sligo will lose its borough council, it being merged with the county council.
The number of councillors across the country will be cut by a third.
In a separate move the abolition of section 140 of the Local Government Act 2001 will remove the power that allows county councillors to direct officials and planners to take certain decisions in relation to the rezoning of land and the granting of planning permissions.
