Club Notes – Naomh Adhamhnáin – 05.11.12
On Monday we said a tearful goodbye to the much beloved Elaine Winston Friel. There was a huge turnout at the wake and funeral and that is no surprise considering how many lives she touched both through her work as a teacher in Loreto Convent and her involvement in the GAA with St. Eunan’s and Termon in her all too short a spell among us. We send our deepest sympathies to her husband Francie, parents Joe & Mary, brothers Kevin and Darren, sister in law Teresa, Oran, Daithi and Rebecca and to the Friel family, Dan & Dymphna, Brendan, Daniel and Thomas. Ár dheis Dé go raibh a anam.
In a game that somehow became less important to us all after the events of the weekend, the lads put on a brave battling display to keep in touch all the way through the final with N. Conaill, young Lee McMonagle, playing in his first Senior Final struck home a decisive late goal that edged the Black & Amber back in front before Mark McGowan’s late 45 sealed the win. Surely there was touch of divine inspiration that came our way to deliver the Dr. Maguire Cup back to Letterkenny and St. Eunan’s for the first time since 2009. They travel to Armagh to face the might of Crossmaglen next Sunday.
The Seniors win made it 3 out of 3 in the last week in Championship finals. Last Tuesday the U16 girls claimed the county crown with a hard fought win over a brave Naomh Mhuire team in Termon by 3-07 to 3-02 and on Saturday the Minor girls avenged their 2010 U16 final defeat against St. Michael’s when they took home the title in Fanad winning by 3-07 to 3-01. Many of these girls were taught by Elaine and she will be so proud of them as she also coached many of them at the school.
U12 Girls training resumes this Wednesday, Nov. 7th in the Convent Gym at 6pm. €2 per child.
There were 4 teams playing in the Oireachteas Senior Hurling Competition on Saturday held O’Donnell Park. Na Maigha of Derry, Strabane Shamrocks of Tyrone and Cushendun of Antrim joined St Eunan’s. St Eunan’s won the B Final against the Strabane Shamrocks in a tight game. Thanks to all involved.
U10 hurling starts this Wednesday, 7th November at 7pm in the Aura. €3 per child. The hurling / camogie academy starts at 6:30pm this Friday 8th Nov. The U12 hurling is on Wednesday’s at 7pm in the new game On Indoor Astroturf facility in Kiltoy.
Good luck to all the Naomh Adhamhnáin competitors who have qualified for the county final of Scór na nÓg in Glenswilly on Saturday night. The club will be taking part in the county final in four categories as a result of their fine displays in the semi final in Glenfin three weeks ago. Ádh mór oraibh san Aithriseoireacht, Rince Foirne, Tráth na gceist agus Ceol Uirlise. Go n-éirigh go geal libh. The competition starts at 7:30pm and all support for our competitors will be most welcome.
