BOWEL DISEASE INFORMATION EVENING IN LETTERKENNY

The annual information evening dedicated to Inflammatory Bowel Disease which includes Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn’s Disease takes place from 6pm – 7pm on Tuesday 20 November in the Radisson Hotel in Letterkenny.
 
At the information evening healthcare professionals from Letterkenny General Hospital including: Dr C Steele, Consultant Gastroenterologist ;Bronagh Mc Manus, Pharmacist; Rita Marren, Clinical Nurse Specialist, Stoma Care and Cathy Walsh, Colorectal Clinical Nurse Specialist will speak on topics related to Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Treatment Pathways, Immunosuppressant and surgery.
 
After the talks there will be an opportunity for members of the public to speak to the Gastroenterology Team on a one-to-one basis.
 
Cathy Walsh, Colorectal Clinical Nurse Specialist says, “Inflammatory Bowel Disease is a chronic condition that affects a young population. They require advice and support on diagnosis and the treatment involved. Providing support and information will lead to a better quality of life through good management of their condition. The meeting is a chance to meet others who are going through similar experiences.”
 
There are an estimated 15,000 people in Ireland with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD); you can get the disease at any age but most people are diagnosed between the ages of 15 and 30. IBD affects men and women equally. There is no known cause of IBD but viruses, genetics and smoking can lead to changes in the immune system that may cause the disease.
 
There are approximately 350 people with Inflammatory Bowel Disease being treated at Letterkenny General Hospital.
 
The Inflammatory Bowel Disease annual information evening is free of charge and starts at 6pm on Tuesday 20 November in the Radisson Hotel in Letterkenny. All are welcome!
