IT was the referendum that most people hadn’t a clue about.
And less than 30 per cent of the people of Co Donegal bothered to turn out on Saturday to vote in the Children’s Referendum.
Taoiseach Enda Kenny insisted: “It’s a democracy, we can’t force people to vote.”
But the Saturday turn-out appears to have more to do with the unclear messages from both the main political parties who campaigned for a ‘Yes’ vote and those who opposed it.
And the Government’s decision to break the law by financing the ‘Yes’ side of the argument only added to the confusion.
Counting begins later today.
Donegal is expected to vote No overall.
