DONEGAL County Council could face an expensive legal battle after the owners of the old Portsalon Hotel hit the authority with a €4.5M bill.
The building – which was almost 200 years old – was demolished in 1991 by the council.
In a statement LTG Developments Limited, based in Stevenage in England, said it had now invoiced Donegal County Council, for €4.5m for the damage caused by the demolition and loss of capital.
Michael Ruggeri, the spokesman for the company said: “I have tried for years to reason with the Council.
“The beach at Portsalon is world class, has a Blue Flag, and my redevelopment plans would bring jobs and prosperity to the area.”
LTG said it wrote to the Contracts Manager more than four months ago and “have still not received a response to the issues that were raised.”
The statement went on: “The company has repeatedly stated to the Council, that it does not want to have a potential adverse impact on the public purse at this time, and would welcome the emergence of a mutually beneficial way forward, even at this late stage.”
Ruggeri said “matters have come to a head because the Council is attempting to interfere with our rights as the owners of the land and we will not allow this to happen.”
No-one from Donegal County Council was available for comment last night.
