Motorists have been warned to take extra care tonight as temperatures are set to plummet to -4 degrees across Donegal.

Met Eireann are warning of black ice on roads as the first plunging temperatures of winter take hold.

There was ice on many roads and footpaths around villages and town across Donegal this morning.

Temperatures barely got above four degrees in many places throughout the day leaving a numbing cold.

None of the major roads were treated but gritters are set to take to the roads in the coming days.

There were no reports of any major accidents as a result of the black ice across the county.

A Garda spokesman said “We would simply ask people to slow down and not to take any chances.”
