The van catches fire as the fire service arrives

A workman had a lucky escape when he van suddenly caught fire in Letterkenny this afternoon.

The dramatic incident happened in the Ashbrook area of the town just after 1pm.

The workman was forced to jump from the van but had time to empty his belongings from the van before it caught fire fully.

Firemen bring the blaze under control

Our exclusive pictures show the van becoming engulfed in flames just seconds before members of the fire service arrived.

Firemen wearing breathing apparatus managed to put the fire out.

Gardai arrived and kept members of the public at a safety distance from the flames.

An investigation into the cause of the blaze is underway.
