A SUCCESSFUL Co Donegal businessman has been asked to head up a task force to save the remaining jobs in the Quinn Group, the businesses taken off the former billionaire Sean Quinn.
David Mackey is a former Chief Executive at Quinns and addressed a meeting in Co Cavan last night set up to try to save the remaining positions in the businesses along the Border.
The former Cavan and South Tipperary county manager, originally from Letterkenny, rose up through the ranks of the Quinn Group over many years.
The Letterkenny man spoke at a meeting set up by Concerned Irish Citizens – a group which campaigns for the Quinn family.
However the meeting, which was attended by several TDs, was aimed at saving further job losses in the numerous companies in Derrylin and Ballyconnell which are now run by administrators.
A former colleague of Mr Mackey, Denis Doogan – also a former Quinn Group Director – had planned to be at last night’s meeting but had to withdraw because of illness.
But a statement read out on his behalf he accused the company’s new bosses of clearing local people out of senior positions and replacing them with people from outside the industries.
“When the decision was taken to remove Quinn Insurance and Quinn Group from the control of Sean Quinn, the dawn of one of the greatest cover ups in the history of the Irish Republic had arrived,” said Mr Doogan.
“This cover up has seen the persecution of Sean Quinn and his family over the last two to three years in an attempt to deflect the focus away from a failed banking system.”
Mr Mackey then spoke, saying he agreed with what Mr Doogan had said.
“What Denis Doogan said was fair and balanced,” he said, urging local TDs to read his letter.
He said people needed now however to be positive and look forward.
The Letterkenny man was asked if he would consider heading up a task force with local politicians and others to monitor the Quinn jobs that are left.
He agreed he would go into talks about it.
