DONEGAL ROADS ‘DANGEROUS’ AFTER OVERNIGHT FREEZE

UPDATED: BLACK ice and a thick frost has caused chaos on numerous roads around Co Donegal this morning after a bitterly cold night.

Temperatures fell as low as -5C overnight.

While Donegal County Council has gritted hundreds of kilometres of main roads, most secondary and rural roads are not on the gritters’ route.

Roads are dangerous in many areas as a result.

They are particularly bad around the Twin Towns, Convoy, Letterkenny, Milford, Ramelton, across Inishowen as well as in Gaoth Dobhair, Ballyshannon, Pettigo and Donegal Town.

Black ice in Glenties is “dreadful” according to one reader and it’s not much better in Ardara.

A car has crashed near Lifford and the junction of the Ballyare Road at Illistrin is “like an ice rink.” Gardai set up a patrol there to warn motorists of the danger.

The Lifford Raphoe Road at Tullrap is blocked after an accident and diversions are in place; however the roads being used to get around the accident are very slippy.

An AA Ireland spokesman told us: “Gardai are advising motorists to take care around Glenties, where roads are quite slippery.

“Black ice is also around Letterkenny and Buncrana.”
