GARDAI BELIEVE STOLEN TAXI MAY HAVE BEEN USED IN ROBBERY ON POST OFFICE

Two armed men have threatened staff at Burt Post Office during a raid on the premises this morning.

It is believed the raiders may have used a stolen taxi to carry out the raid.

Two armed and masked men burst into the premises at 11.30am and demanded cash.

An undisclosed amount of cash was handed over and the men who escaped in the direction of Derry.

Nobody was hurt during the raid.

It’s the latest robbery on a post office along the border.

Post offices in Carrigans and St Johnston have also been targeted in recent months.

Local county councillor Paul Canning has been lobbying for a stronger Garda presence in the area.

He said the latest raid is another example of cross-border crime being allowed to flourish because of a lack of Garda resources.

Gardai say a full investigation has been launched into this morning’s raid.

Garda Inspector David Murphy said “A car pulled up and two masked men entered the premises. We suspect one man had a handgun.

“We believe the car came from Bridgend direction and headed back in the same direction.

“We would appeal to anyone who was in the area to contact us,” he said.
