A community alert scheme was launched in the Termon/Kimacrennan are last night after a spate of burglaries in recent weeks.

A meeting of more than 40 locals at the Thatched House in Kilmacrennan heard there has been at least seven burglaries in the past month in the local area.

A spokesman for the group said that is probably the same number of break-ins as there has been for the entire year before that.

Locals expressed their fears to a local Garda representative who attended last night’s meeting.

A committee of seven people including chairman and local Cllr Michael McBride was elected to set up the community alert scheme.

The group already has plans to introduce a text alert scheme to combat any suspicious activity in the locality.

A spokesman told Donegal Daily “People are worried by the increase in the number of breaks-ins and they have every right to be.

“We have decided we must do something as a community to combat this threat and to keep people and their property safe.”

The next meeting of the group will take place on Wednesday, January 9th at 7.30pm in the Thatched Cottage.
