EDUCATION Minister Ruairi Quinn has expressed his deep shock at the death of Shannon Gallagher, the Ballybofey schoolgirl who took her own life on Wednesday.

In a statement a spokesman for the Minister said: “The Minister and the Department for Education & Skills are deeply shocked and saddened to learn of the death of Shannon Gallagher. We would like to extend our sympathies to her family and friends.

“The priority of the Department is to provide support and assistance to the students and staff at Finn Valley College at this very difficult time.

“Psychologists from NEPS (National Educational Psychological Service) are at the school as part of the critical incident team.

“They are supporting the school staff in responding to the needs of the pupils at this difficult time. They are working in collaboration with colleagues from the National Office of Suicide Prevention and the HSE Clinical Psychology and Child & Adolescent Mental Health services.”
