RTE GET A LESSON IN SHOPPING – LK STYLE!

The Letterkenny Chamber and Shop LK got the chance to promote Letterkenny on RTE television this week and show how they are fighting back.

Shopping in Letterkenny is getting better and better and even RTE has noticed.

The success of the Shop LK Christmas event has caught the attention of the ‘RTE Today Show.’

On Thursday evening, Letterkenny was showcased to a country wide audience. Emma Boylan, Digital Marketer for Letterkenny Chamber went live on RTE to highlight the benefits of shopping in Letterkenny this Christmas to back up the wonderful video of the Christmas lights switch on event that was also shown.

Co-presenter Dáithí Ó Sé commented on Emma’s ShopLK t-shirt – “Is that shop Limerick?”

But Emma was quick to tell him that it was Letterkenny being represented and went on to highlight the many reasons why shopping in Letterkenny is a must this Christmas.

“Letterkenny has a wide variety of shops from major brands to local independent retailers……with the majority of retailers giving 25% on the sterling…it is the commercial centre of Donegal” stated Emma. Letterkenny Chamber intends to send Dáithí a Shop LK t-shirt of his own, along with a turkey curry recipe, a little joke between Emma and Dáithí. The full interview can be seen on RTE player.

The main focus was on shop local and Shop LK and what Letterkenny was doing compared to other towns. Shop LK started in 2004, long before ‘shop local’ was trendy.

The voucher system was put into place in 2006 and to date €1.2million worth of vouchers have been sold. This is great for Letterkenny as all this money goes straight back into the local community.

Toni Forrester Letterkenny Chamber CEO remarked “Shop local is so important for our business community to survive and thrive, to reach €1.2 million has been an amazing achievement. Taking into account the multiplier effect we believe this figure could be doubled at the very least.”

Through Shop LK Letterkenny is fighting back and taking control of its own future. In general retailers in the town are reporting better Christmas sales and with the sterling rates available we hope the trend will last.

With such successful shop local seasonal campaigns, a huge range of businesses, great rates for sterling and attitudes turning back to shopping local in Letterkenny; things can only get better.

Shop LK vouchers can be purchased in Letterkenny Chamber or online at www.shoplk.ie. They make the perfect gift as they can be spent in over 100 businesses in Letterkenny. From an eye brow wax to an oil fill a Shop LK Voucher is a shopping spree in your pocket.
