THE YEAR 2012 just keeps getting better for Donegal.
The All-Ireland Champions are celebrating again today because Donegal Daily can reveal that their training centre in Convoy is to get a massive €300,000 cash boost.
Lottery funding is being released to build state-of-the-art changing room and backroom facilities.
The Centre of Excellence will eventually cost €3.6M.
The GAA released €250,000 towards the centre in August after the county board’s fundraising wing managed to raise €125,000.
Today’s lottery funding of €300,000 will allow for the completion of the changing rooms and is being welcomed by the county board.
The money was announced by Sports Minister Michael Ring after meetings with both the County Board and Fine Gael TDs Dinny McGinley and Joe McHugh.
The TDs said in a joint statement: “The Government has this morning confirmed its decision to invest €300,000 in the new Donegal GAA Centre of Excellence in Convoy. The Convoy Centre of Excellence will be a state-of-the- art facility for young players from across the county.
“Donegal County Board is to be commended for its ambition and energy in driving this Centre of Excellence project. The Centre of Excellence will support the great work that Donegal GAA clubs are doing in our local communities to nurture the talents of young players, all of whom are inspired by Donegal’s success in the All Ireland Football Championship this year. The ambassadorial work that Donegal senior players and management are doing to promote GAA in our county at present, is heightening interest in Gaelic Games in Donegal. This is very positive.
“We have worked as Donegal Fine Gael TDs together with Donegal County Board to promote the value of the Donegal GAA Centre of Excellence. Minister for Sport Michael Ring TD’s decision to sanction this funding is very welcome.”
