IMG_1396A COUNTY Donegal man’s dedication to sport has been recognised – in the New Year’s Honours List in Gibraltar.

Mick McElwee’s award of the Gibraltar Medal was given to him for services to sport, particularly football.

Mick is the son of Patsy McElwee, deceased of Muineagh, Ballyheerin and Ellen, nee Wilhare, deceased of Devlinreagh, Carrigart.

Mick grew up in Corby and has played football to a very high standard all his life. He played for Fanad and won a number of trophies with them.

He has lived and worked in Gibraltar for many years, marrying a local girl, Yvette – pictured with him above.

He retains strong links with Donegal, returning regularly to see his aunt, Josie McFadden, and uncle John Wilhare as well as his many cousins and friends.

He last returned in April this year to celebrate his 50th birthday on the Isle of Roy with friends and family.

His eldest daughter Megan inherited her father’s love of Ireland and is studying Economics at UCD. His other children are Molly, 18 and Patrick John (PJ) 14.

His sister Grace told us: “We are so proud of him.”

Mick’s award was presented by the island’s Governor, Sir Adrian Johns.
