DONEGAL County Councillor Dessie Larkin took on RTE and Met Eireann in 2012 – because of their reports about rain in Co Donegal.
Now it turns out Dessie was right.
The councillor lodged a formal complaint with the station, insisting that the channel always reported rain in the North West….even on dry days.
Now in its climate and weather annual report Met Eireann said Donegal had just 92% of its normal annual rainfall, the lowest in the country.
And the county also set a new record for sunshine in a single day!
The majority of stations recorded their sunniest day of the year at the end of May, with the highest daily sunshine of the year of 15.7 hours recorded at Ballyshannon (Cathleen’s Fall), Co. Donegal on May 27th, equalling its highest annual daily sunshine since 1988 (24 years).
It wasn’t all sunshine and picnics though.
Malin Head reported 50.9 mm of rain on June 22nd, its highest annual and June fall since 1987 (25 years).
The highest gust of the year was 91 knots (168 km/h) was also recorded at Malin Head on January 3rd recorded as a low pressure centre of European Windstorm Ulli moved near to Ireland.
It was the joint highest January gust ever recorded at the station, since wind records began in 1956 (56 years).
