Businessman and singer Gavin Boyle is well-known across Donegal and further afield and has always championed all his native county has to offer. He tells us all he likes and dislikes about Donegal.Gavin Boyle

What is your favourite place in Donegal?

Mullaghduff. It’s home and the community spirit here is second to none. It’s a great place to live and grow up.

What is the one thing you would change about the county?

I would make it flatter – the hills are a killer when you’re out running!

Who is the one person in Donegal you look up to?

Daniel O’ Donnell. He is a great ambassador for his homeland, county, country and has never ever forgot about where he has come from and continues to promote Donegal wherever he travels. He is to be admired for all that he has done in his career.

Daniel O’Donnell or Packie Bonner?

Daniel but Packie is also a true gentleman

What has been your proudest moment as a Donegal man?

Winning the Sam Maguire last year – unforgettable.

What has been your saddest moment?

Losing friends and family to the dreaded disease of cancer.

What is your favourite Donegal-made product?

Donegal Pens – These young Rosses lads have done very well for themselves and worked hard to build their business up. They deserve great success.

Donegal’s greatest ambassador?

Donegal’s musicians – Altan, Clannad, Enya, Daniel to name but a few.

Which successful Donegal business person do you look up to?

Pat Nora Gallagher from Dungloe. In the times that are in it, Pat took a big risk opening a new Bar & Restaurant in Dungloe last year, along with opening the Daniel O Donnell Visitors Centre. Both places created new employment for the locals and Pat deserves recognition for what he has done.

Who is Donegal’s greatest Sportsperson?

Without a doubt Jim Mc Guinness.

What is your favourite Donegal restaurant?

My Partner Jay is a brilliant cook so our house is a great restaurant. Other than than it would be Sal & Paddy Gallaghers on a Friday night and The Fantastic Danny Minnies Restaurant in Annagry.

Donegal’s Golden Eagles or Basking Sharks?

There are enough “Sharks” out there so I would go with Eagles.

Your nomination for Donegal’s most stylish person?

After myself of course, I would have to go with Mr Noel Cunningham!

Your favourite Donegal saying or expression?

“That’s a wake on ya”. Nearly every weekend when I come home, I am greeted with this saying and it cracks me up, especially as I have no idea who the person is who has died!

Will Donegal win the All Ireland this year?

If last year is anything to go by, I certainly hope so.

What is your favourite Donegal food?

Has to be my Great Uncle Bernie Gillespie’s filleted fish. I love coming home to mums and waiting for me on the pan is Bernie’s fish, if it could be boxed and sold he would make a fortune!

What is the one thing that annoys you about Donegal?

Honestly, nothing.

If you had a million euro to change something about Donegal, what would it be?

I would use it to create employment to bring those family & friends that had to leave the county to get work, back home again.
