The RSA is alerting road users of very cold weather for the coming week with overnight temperatures falling as low as -4 degrees in parts of the county.
The recent mild weather over Co Donegal is ending with roads in the county set to be hit once again with ice.
Donegal County Council will grit all main roads overnight.
The RSA has issued these top 10 tips for driving in very cold weather:
1. Before you start your journey check the weather forecasts and clear your windows and mirrors before you set out.
2. Carry a screen scraper and de-icer and do not use hot water on wind screens as it may crack the glass
3. Check whether your lights are fully functional and replace any broken bulbs.
4. Use your dipped headlights so others will see you.
5. Watch out for black ice, especially in sheltered/ shaded areas
6. Check your tyres (including spare wheel) and replace them if the thread depth falls below 3mm
7. In icy conditions manoeuvre slowly, slow down and leave plenty of space between you and the car in front.
8. In patches of fog switch on fog lamps and watch out for pedestrians, cyclists and other vulnerable road users. Switch off fog lights once foggy conditions improve.
9. Do not drive on tail lights of the vehicle in front (Target Fixing). This can give a false sense of security and you will be too close to the vehicle in front.
10. Check out our Facebook Weather App here to see the weather conditions near you http://ow.ly/gDMr4.
