COMMUNITY RAISES €1,700 FOR BRAVE GRETA IN JUST 10 DAYS

The people of Donegal have responded magnificently by donating more than €1,700 to burgled pensioner Greta Lilly.Cllr Ciaran McLaughlin

Mrs Lilly was punched and had her handbag robbed when thugs broke into her home two weeks ago in Buncrana.

The widow had a substantial amount of cash at her home at Aghilly which she was saving to buy new windows.

Local councillor Ciaran McLaughlin decided to take it upon himself to start a fund for Mrs Lilly at Buncrana Credit Union.

And just little more than a week later, the fund has more than €1,700.

Cllr McLaughlin said the money will be given directly to Mrs Lilly.

“The fund will stay open for a month and all the money will be given to Mrs Lilly. She has been through a lot and the community has been magnificent.

“I never had any doubt that the people of Buncrana and Donegal would donate generously,” he said.

As well as getting new windows, Mrs Lilly requires a new back door.

Cllr McLaughlin said Greta has been surrounded by family and friends since she got out of hospital and that she has also spent time at the Beach Hill Manor nursing home which let her stay for a week free of charge.

“I haven’t spoken to her myself but her neighbours have told me she is in good enough form considering all she has been through.

“I believe there is somebody staying with her now and we will all keep an eye on her now,” said Ciaran.
