Fianna Fáil Senator Brian Ó Domhnaill has accused the Environment Minister Phil Hogan of refusing to be straight with septic tank owners.
The Donegal Senator was speaking after Minister Hogan refused his appeal for an extension to the registration deadline until after the new inspection standards are published.
Senator Ó Domhnaill again appealed to Minister Hogan in the Seanad today to publish the new septic tank inspection standards before forcing homeowners to register their tanks. The Minister refused and is pressing ahead with the registration deadline of February 1st.
“Once again the Minister has refused to consider the concerns of septic tank owners who remain in the dark about what the new septic tank legislation will mean for them,” said Senator Ó Domhnaill.
“His refusal to publish the National Inspection Plan before forcing people to register demonstrates a total disregard for the concerns of septic tank owners. In my view, septic tank owners are entitled to the full facts before they are forced to register.
“The Minister has left people with no choice but to adhere to the February 1st deadline if they wish to avail of the grant aid available. It is regrettable that they are being made do this while so much confusion remains about the standards that will apply and what this will all mean for them.”
