An Irish/American group is to lobby for US President Barack Obama to visit Donegal when he takes part in the G8 Summit in Fermanagh in June.

During his last visit to Ireland some American TV networks reported that he had visited Donegal…instead of his ancestral home of Moneygall.

Now if his supporters here get their way, he will actually be coming to the real Ireland here in Donegal.

Democrats Abroad Ireland gathered at the Gresham hotel in Dublin this week to celebrate the inauguration of the US President for a second term in office.

Led by Gaobh Dobhair man, Sean Hillen, national public relations director for DA Ireland, the group’s chairperson and other dignitaries said they would lobby the White House for such an event.

Hillen said presence of the US President could be a calming influence on angry clashes in the north and help renew the frayed peace process – as former US president Bill Clinton did before him with considerable global political success.

Aside from Hillen, the DA event this week had a marked Donegal presence, including Lisa McKelvey, a Dublin-based RTE correspondent from Dungloe, attending the event in a personal capacity.

Donegal Mayor Frank McBrearty said he was very open to discussing the idea, saying such an event would be “very beneficial in enhancing the county’s image both at home and abroad and help attract many more visitors to see what we have to offer in terms of hospitality and enjoyment.”
