HUNDREDS of people from Co Donegal today attended a march in protest at the Government’s decision to pay off the debts of the disgraced Anglo Irish Bank.
Joe Murphy, from Donegal Action Against Austerity, was among those who joined an estiamted 7,000 people on a march through the streets of Sligo.
“It was a great turn-out and a powerful message to the Government,” said Murphy.
ICTU said more than 110,000 people took part in the demonstrations but Gardai said it was 50,000.
Several gardai from Donegal also took part in the Sligo march.
ICTU General Secretary David Begg told the Dublin crowd there would be more “stoic little pixie-heads” and no more “Mr Nice Guy”.
He said the situation where Irish people were paying 42% of the European banking debt burden was not fair.
A rally took place in the main street, which was addressed by a number of speakers including union officials and a representative of the Senior Citizens Parliament.
