Ballyshannon house

Residents living close to the home which was burned in an arson attack this morning have condemned the incident.

A full Garda investigation is underway into the cause of a fire which gutted the house in Ballyshannon just after 3am.

The house was bought by Donegal County Council for €230,000 allocated to a family of 13 from the Travelling community.

Residents-spokesman AJ Finnerty appealed for anyone with nay information on the attack to come forward.parkill fire

“We are shocked and horrified at the fire of a home in our locality. We are saddened to see that such a beautiful home has been damaged.

“We understand that a full investigation will be carried out by An Garda Siochana. We ask that anybody who has information in relation to this fire contact their local Garda station.”

Meanwhile the Donegal Travellers Project said its members were “shocked, saddened, and outraged” by the attack.

“We are also extremely upset for the family who were supposed to move into the house.

“Over the past three weeks there has been a hardening of attitudes in Donegal against Travellers which has been very difficult for the Traveller community here.

“We are asking all political parties and representatives to come together to address this emergency in Donegal and to identify as a matter of urgency appropriate housing for this family and other families living in inappropriate conditions.”
