Portsalon Golf Club

Captains & Presidents Drive In

Despite the poor weather conditions which prevailed on Sunday last there was a large turnout for the President’s and Captain’s drive in at Portsaon Golf Club. It was indeed a remarkable event as for the first time in the history of Portsalon Golf Club that a lady member (Kathleen Mc Cormick) was bestowed with the coveted title of club President. Added to this historic event also saw the President’s daughter Deirdre Hensey tee off as the Lady Captain for 2013.This was yet another first for Portsalon golf club and surely will go down in the history books as the first club in the county if not in the country to have a mother and daughter hold the prestigious club tiles of President and Lady Captain. Not being overawed by the occasion the Portsalon Captain Joe Harkin set the standards for the coming year much to the delight of his admirers with a majestic drive which split the first fairway. As the morning rain continued the competition secretary had to do a new draw as golfers cancelled due to the wet conditions. The poor weather did not deter the large turnout and the event got under way as a team classic with two holes counting. The winning team was Joe Hensey, Noel Nicholl, Fergus Friel and Dave Jones with 88 points , runners up Martin Blaney, Damian Hannigan, James Lynch and Adrian Mc Alary. Both captain’s Joe Harkin and lady captain club president Kathleen Mc Cormick thanked everyone for their good wishes and for the numbers who turn up on the day. They had a special thank you to the Otway captain Patrick Kelly and Otway Lady captain Mary Hasson who played on the day and wished them both success in their year ahead.
