Glencar crash

Letterkenny Town Council has allocated €25,000 to introduce safety measures at one of the town’s most notorious accident blackspots.

The area, known locally as Black’s Bridge at Glencar, has been the scene of more than 22 accidents in the past four years.

Just a number of weeks ago, a car flipped onto its roof and the river miraculously escaped serious injury.

Local town councillor Jimmy Kavanagh said the matter has been discussed and the council has promised to be pro-active on introducing safety-measures in the area.

“The Council have informed me that they are in the process of upgrading and improving existing lining and signage in the area.

“Reflective bollards have recently been erected along the kerbing to the bends on the upward approach.

“The council are also compiling a road safety report which will include a measurement of the current speed of traffic in the area, a review of the recorded collision history and a summary of possible improvement measures,” he said

This report will be made available to members for discussion as soon as it is available, said Colr Kavanagh.
