The west Donegal community project ‘Alternative Community Cinema’ will hold its first film night of 2013 at the beginning of March. The date for the event is Saturday 2nd March and it will be held in Annagry Hall.
Over the past number of years the project has held numerous such film nights all which have seen large numbers of people attending. The events which are free to attend include not only a film showing, but guest speakers, free food and live music.
Speaking of the up-coming event, local community activist and event organiser Micheál Cholm Mac Giolla Easbuig said the evening would be both informative and entertaining.
“What we try to achieve with these events is to have an evening when people can not only have a night out where they meet with other members of the community, learn about a particular contemporary issue and listen to and partake in discussion in it, but also eat, socialize and enjoy live music all for little or no expense” he said.
“The latest event will be no different. The film to be screened on the night is entitled ‘Inside Job’ and is a multi-award winning documentary film which examines the corruption within the United States financial services industry, a corruption which led to economic calamity. So it is a very current subject and will no doubt lead to some interesting debate.
“We will also have guest speakers on the night including film maker Loïc Jourdain, Independent TD Thomas Pringle and Eugene McCartan of the Communist Party. There will be free food available for everyone attending and the evening will be finished off with live music by Ger Dé Róiste and Pól Chonnie Shéila Móra.
One of the speakers for the evening, Thomas Pringle TD, also commented on the event saying it was a great community based initiative and he encouraged people to support it.
“Events such as these are few and far between and I would encourage people to come along. The subject of the film will resonate with everyone given that we have all been affected by financial corruption, a fact which is widely known but not often examined” Deputy Pringle said.
“It is also not only a great social event for the local community providing education, awareness and entertainment but it is all done free of charge for the community and in these difficult economic times it is good that people have an opportunity to get out, get informed and have a good time for little or no cost.”
The film night will start at 7.30pm in Annagry Hall, Annagry, County Donegal. Admission is free of charge and people can bring their own drink.
