NEW LETTERKENNY COURT HOUSE FINALLY GIVEN GO-AHEAD

dd newsDD Exclusive: LETTERKENNY’S new court house has been given the go-ahead, Donegal Daily can reveal.

It was signed off by the Government last night and preparation of the site on the grounds of the old swimming pool off the High Road in the town will begin within weeks.

The procurement process will see the site in public hands before the end of the year.

Donegal North East Deputy Joe McHugh has welcomed the news, saying the facility is much-needed in the town.

It comes after constant criticism of the current facilities by lawyers and judges in recent years.

Circuit Court Judge John O’Hagan has regularly slammed the conditions staff and members of the public had to endure.

Donegal Daily understands that members of the legal profession in Donegal were informed of the decision last night.

Funding for the project was announced last year as part of a Government €2.5Bn stimulus package.

The current court house buildings will be sold off once the new one opens.

The new facility will bring an end to free parking which many people in the town have used the old swimming pool site for in recent years. Work on the current building will take place from Easter to sort some of the ongoing issues.

Work will begin on the new court building – which will have four court rooms – late next year with a 2016 opening.
