CLEAN ESTUARY GROUP TO HOLD PUBLIC MEETING ON HIGH COURT CASE

dolphins at greencastle/movilleTHE Moville and Greencastle based Campaign for Clean Estuary group is set to hold a public meeting to discuss their High Court case against Donegal County Council.

The council has plans to pump treated sewage into Lough Foyle.

Campaign group spokesman Enda Craig told Donegal Daily: “The case was heard over four days and on Friday the judge retired to consider his ruling. This could take some time as there is a considerable body of information that must be considered.

“The legal team for the campaign highlighted “the unanimous resolution of the DCC, the local residents, the shellfishing community, the Loughs Agency, An Taisce, Coastwatch Europe and most important of all, the Inspector of An Bord Pleanala himself (three times over)”, all recommending against approval for this entire project and insisting on discharge outside of the tidal estuary.

“We were reminded again that the Environmental Impact Statement presented by Donegal County Council is an affront to the aims and objectives of the Environmental Impact Assessment Directive.

“We believe that the justice of our case and the strength of our evidence remains beyond question and despite the David and Goliath dimensions of this dispute, remain committed to opposing the determination of Donegal County Council to force this plant and outfall into Lough Foyle, against all reasoned argument in our opinion.

“We owe it to future generations to protect the Foyle Estuary and ensure that the wellbeing of the Foyle is the foundation for future economic opportunities for our community.”

Mr Craig added: “We hope to shortly call a meeting of all interested parties in the campaign to provide full information and answer any questions.

“We are currently in process of constructing a website covering the entire matter and look forward to announcing details of this initiative in the near future.”
