COUNCIL TO DISCUSS EMERGENCY MOTION ON WIND FARMS AFTER TURBINE COLLAPSE

wind turbineDONEGAL county councillors are set to try to introduce an emergency motion on wind farms after the collapse of a wind turbine.

The 64-metre hight Vestas-built turbine snapped and fell at a bog near Maas last Friday.

Cllr Seamus O Domhnaill and several other councillors want assurances that the turbines are safe.

And Sinn Fein TD Pearse Doherty said last night that his party wanted all wind farm plans halted until the Vestas investigation is complete.

The Loughderryduff site has eight other turbines.

Engineers from the Danish manufacturers spent yesterday checking those in the hope none of those fall down too.

The Glenties Windfarm Information Group has been lobbying politicians to discuss the issue.

Last night Pearse Doherty said his party now supported a moratorium on all wind farms while the Donegal investigations continue.

And independent Cllr John Campbell says he will now request an emergency discussion of the wind turbines and the county development plan which allows for turbines on more than 2,000 Co Donegal townlands.

“A workshop to discuss the development plan has been cancelled and I will request a new one,” said Cllr Campbell.
