Joe McHugh in DailFine Gael Donegal North East Deputy, Joe McHugh, has said that statements by US President, Barack Obama, and US Secretary of State, John Kerry, marking the 15th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement, demonstrate the USA’s willingness to be actively involved in building a better future for Ireland.

Deputy McHugh, who is Chairperson of the Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement, said: ‘US President, Barack Obama, and US Secretary of State, John Kerry, both made formal statements this weekend to mark the 15th anniversary of the signing of the Good Friday Agreement.

“These statements, and their strong endorsement of the work being done at cross-community level and with communities in Belfast and across Northern Ireland, demonstrate that the United States of America still wants to be actively involved in building a better future for our country.

“President Obama’s visit to Fermanagh in June for the G-8 summit will also give renewed focus to America’s role in the peace process.

“As Chairperson of the Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement I will continue my work with political leaders, with groups across the border and with communities in Belfast and throughout Northern Ireland to ensure the continuation of this vital work.”
