There are still nearly 1,000 farmers in Co Donegal who applied to the Disadvantaged Areas Scheme (DAS) and have not received any payment, according to Fianna Fáil’s Seanad Spokesperson on Agriculture Senator Brian Ó Domhnaill.
Information received by Fianna Fáil through a series of Parliamentary Questions shows that 8,483 Donegal farmers applied under DAS. 7,500 of these have received payments, while 983 farmers have still not received the money they are owed.
Senator Ó Domhnaill has described the delays as ‘disgraceful’.
“There is no excuse for leaving hundreds farmers waiting since September for the money they are owed under DAS. These farmers are dependent on this support and they simply cannot wait for months on end to get the money they are entitled to,” the Donegal Senator said.
“This is down to the Agriculture Minister Simon Coveney’s own mismanagement. The retrospective stocking density requirements imposed by the Minister is causing protracted delays in the disadvantaged areas payment, leaving 8,000 farmers nationally still waiting for the money they are owed.
“The Minister should not have allowed this to happen. I am calling on him to immediately ensure that all 983 outstanding DAS payments in Donegal, and 8,000 outstanding payments nationally, re processed and issued without further delay.”
