Red Flag to the Bull? Buncrana Beach Party Protest
A PROTEST group which has been holding weekly vigils has urged teachers from around the county to join them tomorrow to show their anger at continuing cuts to the education system.
Donegal teachers are invited to take part in a short, peaceful, quiet march in Buncrana town tomorrow, Sunday, at 3pm. The start and finish point will be the Market Square.
A group of local concerned citizens have been holding weekly protests in solidarity with the Ballyhea (Cork) village, and other towns around the country for the past two months.
Spokesperson Frankie Lavelle said: “We are just a small peaceful group who try to encourage people to stand up and say enough is enough. We have a facebook page which promotes the displaying of homemade red flags outside the houses of Ireland, to show distrust at, primarily, the property tax but also at other austerity measures.”
The group who pledge no allegiance to any political party are extending the invitation to the Teachers of Donegal after witnessing the display of Red Cards by the attendees at a recent conference in Cork when the Education Minister took the stage.
“I thought we might work well together, them with the Red Cards and us with our Red Flags. It will give teachers a place to vent their anger before midterm break ends.”
As it turns out, the local group were ahead of the pack with their invite; A national anti-property tax march next week in Dublin has issued the invite to teachers countrywide to come and march together in the capital.
“So it seems like people are starting to come together to try to show austerity the red card…or flag,” said Lavelle.
“Tomorrow’s walk will be a short loop of the town. Less than half an hour should do it. All Teachers, Homeowners, Jobseekers, concerned citizens will be made very welcome.”
