IT WAS another night from hell for Donegal’s hard-pressed fire personnel as crews worked into the early hours tackling gorse fires in several parts of the county.

Exhausted fire service members are still on standby following several incidents in Inishowen and west Donegal.

The worst of the fires was a mile-wide inferno between Crolly and Loughanure.

Flames also danced high into the night sky at another massive fire on Fahan Hill.

And yet another fire raged overnight near Muckish.

Fire service staff believe some of the 80 major fires they have dealt with in the past week were started deliberately.

At dawn Donegal fire brigade personnel were on standby in case new fires break out.
