UPDATED: A NUMBER of runners from Co Donegal had a lucky escape in Monday’s Boston marathon bomb blasts which left three people dead including an eight-year-old boy and more than 130 others injured, Donegal Daily has learned.

A couple from the east of the county, who have asked us not to name them, were at the finish line when the first bomb went off. There was a second explosion 100 metres away 12 seconds later.

Footage of the blasts is contained in this Boston Globe video on this story above.

Friends of the couple told us they have been left “badly shaken” by the experience.

“They are just so grateful they weren’t killed or injured,” said one close friend.

“They are badly shaken though and their thoughts are with those who died and those who were injured.”

Donegal Daily understands at least five other people from the county were among the 23,000 runners taking part in one of the world’s most prestigious marathons including a woman from Letterkenny AC. They are all safe.

Police have now said a third explosion at a library was not related to the incidents.

According to police, the first bomb exploded at the Marathon Sports running store, and blew out windows in four nearby buildings, injuring 15 to 20 individuals.

The second blast occurred about 50 to 100 yards away, severely injuring more bystanders.

Speaking at the White House President Obama said: “The American people will send a prayer to the people of Boston tonight.

“But make no mistake. We will get to the bottom of this. We will find out who did this and why … We will hold them accountable.”

A number of phone lines are being set up for people seeking more information. Mayor Davies has asked people not to panic as the city has closed down the mobile phone system as part of a security clampdown.

CNN later reported that 132 people are being treated in hospital. Fifteen people are in a critical condition.

It also reported ballbearings may have been attached to the plastic explosive devices.
