The National USI Student Achievement Awards take place in the Shelbourne Hotel, Dublin this Thursday 18 April, 2013 and LYIT students Michelle Long and John Mc Clean have been shortlisted for national honours.

John Mc Clean from the Gardening Club has been shortlisted for Mature Student of the Year Award while Michelle Long, Diabetic Club, has been shortlisted for Student Leader of the Year Award.

Both of these students have excelled in the area of volunteering, they have devoted their time to helping those within the LYIT community and the Letterkenny community, whilst maintaining their high academic standards.

Michelle Long has been a scholarship recipient from the LYIT Student Union Clubs and Societies programme for the past two years. She has organised 4 Diabetic Screening events on campus at LYIT, in tandem with Letterkenny General Hospital.

These events have screened over 600 people, with a 5% referral rate to General Practitioners for queried Diabetes. The screening idea comes from Michelle’s own experiences as a Diabetic from her childhood years. Michelle’s own experience has motivated her to organise Diabetic awareness campaigns and to step forward as a student leader both on and off campus.

John returned to education as mature student two years ago and since then, John has engaged with the community both inside and outside LYIT.

He has organised many charity events, has planted trees and plants in the Donegal Hospice and has a real sense of civic engagement. His enthusiasm has encouraged others to engage in such activities and he is a truly worthy candidate for national honours.

Michelle and John will face stiff competition this Thursday night within their individual categories competition from much larger colleges and universities such as University College Dublin and Trinity College.

However, one thing is certain, LYIT Student Union is proud of the efforts of Michelle and John to continuously strive to help others.

Good luck to both of them.
