SCOUTS IN DOWNINGS

Interest has been expressed in starting a Scout Group in Downings, and Kevin Ferguson the Development Officer for Scouting Ireland in the area, is delighted that interest in starting a group has been raised. “There already are sixteen very active Scout groups in the County, and a new group based in the locality, could offer the Scouting experience to young people in Downings/ Carrigart/Fanad/ Creeslough and the surrounding areas” remarked Kevin.

A scout group can have up to five sections, ”Beaver Scouts 6-8years, Cubs Scouts 9-11years, Scouts 12-15years, Venture Scouts 15-18years and Rover Scouts 18-26years so there is plenty of scope for young people to get involved”.

Like all new groups, getting leaders to help out is vital to the success of a new group. Any adult over the age of 18 would be given all the training and help they need to become a leader. “The beauty about scouting” Kevin remarked, was that “because of the differing age ranges, a volunteer can join an age range section that they feel they would enjoy working with. Even if you feel you would not have the energy to help run a section, there may be skills you possess that could help, for example people who have committee or administration skills are also valuable to the successful running of a scout group.

With a view to setting up a Scout Group it is intended to hold an open evening in the Mevagh Family Resource Centre on the 1st May at 7.30 pm for adults who may be interested in finding out more about setting up a new group in the area.
